Although text messaging is emerging as the most preferred method of tele-socialisation amongst teens, the debate continues as to whether its prevalence is positively or negatively affecting teens’ reading and writing performance. Stephanie Jansen investigates the effectiveness of text messaging as a literacy tool, suggesting that teens are acquiring new skills that contribute to their academic development.
